Racism in America: Still I Rise

“I rise up from a past that’s rooted in pain.” In my mind I like to think that this refers to a tree. It’s past; the start of the tree, is rooted in an idealistic world but as the tree ages and grows it branches off into different ideas and morals.

“I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide.” An ocean is large and expansive. But beneath the surface of rippling exterior is a collection; an assortment of infinite possibilities and ideals. An ocean is also unstoppable. You can build a dam on a river, but you cannot stop the force of an ocean.

“I laugh like I’ve got gold mines diggin’ in my own backyard.” Well, if I had my very own gold mine in my backyard I’m sure I’d be quite happy and giddy, and being a cheerful black person walking down the street may irritate some white supremacists. I’d like to think that she is standing up to those kind of people saying “I don’t care” in her mind or verbally.
